Ace, whose real name is Dorothy McShane, is a beloved character from the long-running British science fiction series Doctor Who. Ace first appeared in the 1987 serial “Dragonfire” and quickly became a fan favorite as the companion of the Seventh Doctor, played by Sylvester McCoy.
Ace is a 20th-century teenager from the London suburb of Perivale.
Known for her brash and rebellious nature, using homemade explosives knwon as Nitro-9 and a baseball bat to tackle enemies.
Ace returned to the series in 2022, reuniting with the Thirteenth Doctor and continuing to captivate audiences with her strength and determination.
As a long term fan of Ace and the 7th Doctor I commissioned myself to recreate the original designs as adorned by Ace on her adventures.

These replica badges have been inspired by the hit BBC One Science Fiction and Time Travel drama Doctor Who.
Originally conceaved during the 1960’s, Doctor Who has gone from strength to strength between 1963 to 1989, where the show was put into haitus before coming back from 2005 where it is still a hugely successful show.
During the 1980’s, Doctor Who welcomed a new companion for the 7th Doctor as played by Sylvester McCoy. Dorothy ‘Ace’ McShane has always been a popular companion amongst Cosplayers but the challenge has always been trying to source accurate badge, patches and pins.
There are a number of designs that are easier to source than others but there are some which even now only come up once in a blue moon. To avoid rare badges being damaged or lost, it was safer to replicate the designs.
In 2021 I decided to create a set of faithful replicas for my own Ace Jacket.
Please note the Fanderson Club badge is based on the design from the 80s. The PO Box listed on the badge is no longer used by the club, please contact them instead at www.fanderson.org.uk.
The badges vary in sizes either being, 58mm, 38mm or 25mm.
Each of these badges have their own unique story for Sophie Aldred (Ace) who picked these to reflect who she is as a person.
A lot of these badges are not available anymore due to their rarity, they are over 30 years old. As part of my journey to replicate the badges and the patches, I produced a coding system for all the badges, pins, patches and artifacts. And did extensive research on the various items, which episodes they appeared in and where they are located on the jackets.
It may be hard to believe but there are over 10 different variation of Ace’s jacket throughout the years, some harder to complete than others. But when it comes to badges specifically there is only 1 which appears in every episode, all the others only made it to one serial!
